Bowl-eligible Hawaii football is guaranteed a spot in the Hawaii Bowl

HENDERSON, NEV. >> A bowl-eligible Hawaii football team will be guaranteed a berth in the Hawaii Bowl, confirmed Bret Gilliland, the deputy commissioner of the Mountain West Conference.

The exception would be if the Warriors were invited to a New Year’s bowl or, beginning next year, the new bowl in Los Angeles. That bowl, which will be played in the stadium being built for the Los Angles Rams and Los Angeles Chargers, has the first choice among Mountain West teams.

It was widely assumed the Warriors were always guaranteed a Hawaii Bowl bid if they had a .500 or better regular season. But that was not the case the past couple years. Gilliland said the guarantee is now in place, a move that will benefit the bowl’s attendance and appease ESPN Events, which owns the game.

Has it been determined who the other conference that has an agreement with that new LA bowl is?

I am not a robot. I predict Hawai’i will be in a bowl game this year.

Thanks for the update about Jahlani, Boola!

WARRIORS ALL! ALL WARRIORS! GO WARRIORS!!!

Yes, Jahlani’s presence on D will be sorely missed. I am happy for his success.

Looking at the Linebackers as a whole I (my opinion) have some worry there. Jahlani missed the last 5 games so a lot of personnel got reps as Batoon tried to figure things out. His presence was important as he led from the sidelines, so a new leader will have to emerge. Sanitoa would have had a large impact here in both scheme and depth so some adjustments need to be made to compensate. I’m hoping Okeke can be used in some packages where Sanitoa would have been because overall the group is very “thin” although the core is pretty good.

Mautautia didn’t have a real solid year last season (as opposed to Sophomore year) but the expectation is still high on him. Scott was not really featured when packaged so was hard to find him. Pavihi was good and bad trying to find his fit. Looked like he might have figured some things out toward the end of the season. Picanco was all over the place (often the wrong place) in his solid, powerful, but awkward way. And Prichard hasn’t played in a while. Everybody else is new so may take some time to develop depth. But you can see this unit has playmaking ability. They just need to be better prepared entering the season than they were last year. Total team (coaches and players) effort needed over the summer. Looking forward to see what develops, especially with Bowers and Ho-Ching in reserve, and Paul Scott in his 3rd year. Can do. Can. Trust.

Just a matter of time before Hawaii will be “first choice” over Boise St. The exciting “style of play” just needs to translate into some wins now. Boise is still “the one” so there is a lot of work to do still. But UH is coming soon. Be ready. Everybody. Especially marketing department.

Beginning 2020, MWC will have 6 Bowl Games.

The 7th will be “conditional” ???

Los Angeles Bowl vs. TBD (believed to be Pac-12)
Famous Idaho Potato Bowl vs. MAC
New Mexico Bowl vs. Conference USA
NOVA Home Loans Arizona Bowl vs. MAC
SoFi Hawaii Bowl vs. AAC or Conference USA
Unnamed ESPN bowl in Dallas-Forth Worth vs. TBD

Cheez-It Bowl vs. Big Ten or Big 12

It’s funny that both UH and BYU if bowl eligible will automatically be sent to the Hawaii Bowl if they don’t make the NY6 bowl. At least they didn’t schedule each other in the future for awhile. It should be a great game and crowd for that matchup.

    Bummer losing LV bowl.

#5 Numbers may not be an issue. I can see Batoon using 6 DBs and 1 LB at times.

Though my son goes to UH and I’m a fan of their football, volleyball, & baseball teams, I want to see a competitive that means something when I watch a bowl game, a 5 – 5 is not competitive, its just an excuse to have a tailgate party during the game.

Don’t need to have a good record to be competitive in a football game. I’ve witnessed a lot of good games and upsets b4.

I’ve witnessed a lot of good tailgate parties!

Linebacker play is going to be THE make or break unit for Hawaii in 2019. Batoon will definitely not be running a Dime defense outside of 3rd and long In the first 7 games of the season because 6 of those 7 teams are prolific run teams.

Arizona Jr. RB JJ Taylor was 7th in the nation last year in rushing averaging almost 120 ypg.

Oregon St didn’t get any attention last year because of their dismal record, but quietly had a breakout star turned true-freshman all-american in RB Jermar Jefferson. Jermar was 9th in the nation in rushing behind a sub-par O-Line. (He was a 3 star prospect out of Redondo Beach, CA and offered by the Warriors)

Washington is powerhouse of a run team right now led by a veteran O-line returning 4 of 5 starters. Center Nick Harris is a serious pro prospect and LT Trey Adams will almost certainly be a first round pick in 2020.

With Gangi off to the CFL, Nevada will be relying on the run game heavily early in the season while Florida State transfer Malik Henry get’s his new system sea-legs.

Thank goodness Hawaii largely side-stepped Alex Mattisons reign of terror at Boise St. I wish him the best in Minnesota. With all the question marks at QB and RB this year for Boise, I really believe this could be our upset of the year. Though LT Ezra Cleveland will be a force to deal with.

Air Force runs the ball 4x more than they pass. This game will be trench warfare from start to finish. The play of our DL/LB units will decide this game.

I agree with you Burro that our DBs are an experienced group and will likely be a standout unit this year, 6 of the first 7 games will not be seeing a ton of Dime defense. It’ll be super interesting to see how Corey and Nick decide to use tweeners like Okeke and Hicks. I’m also pretty excited to see Killins get on the field this fall. I think Victor is seen as the gem of the class, but Travon was just as much of a steal. UCF was after him and looked poised to sign, even against offers from Big-10 and Big-12 programs, but I think they rescinded his offer after picking up 4 other 3-star DBs in the class and having all four DB starters returning.

Sorry for the novel, but getting pretty hyped for the year! #PrideRock

Stopped by practice for a an hour this morning and liked what I saw. Bigger, stronger, faster, deeper.

Met Justin Uahinui’s dad, a super nice guy who is the QB coach for Farrington’s JV team. You can see why Justin is such a good QB. Gained a lot of insight from him. The QBs look good, Cole is definitely the man.

Of course the highlight of the practice was when Stephen Tsai stopped by to say hi. In addition to QB and team talk, all Coach Uahinui and I could talk about was how awesome Stephen is, and how cool it is to chat with him.

    GO WARRIORS!!!

    Crazy that football is starting!

#17 – awesome. I’m just hoping that the D is playing a lot of third and long this season.
